Diet and beauty

Posted on 30 January, 2014 at 18:14 Comments comments ()
Hello everyone.
I have always been interested in nutrition but over the last year I have been changing my eating habits to cut out sugar, wheat, soy, corn (all genetically modified) and processed foods.  I have been trying to cook with and eat one ingredient foods (eg fresh tomatoes, not canned with added sugar, salt and those weird number ingredients).  I believe all these additives in our food and the highly processed products are detrimental to our health and well being.  Our skin and complexion, not to mention our internal processes reflect these nasties in our diet.  Lack lustre skin, acne, premature aging, dermatitis are all signs our skin in under stress.  This is a website I have enjoyed and believe is getting back to where we should be with our eating: www.beyonddiet.com.

Ever wondered why players have a massage before a game?

Posted on 4 September, 2013 at 22:01 Comments comments ()
 This is why:

The use of massage before and after a sporting event has both physical and mental effects on exercise and performance for the athlete or sports person.

Massage is often used by runners before a race or training as part of their warm up routine. Most sports therapists and coaches acknowledge that initial 'warming up' exercises are a necessary preparation for safe athletic activity.  Massage is not to replace but adds to pre race/match warm ups.

A massage can also stimulate the release of the body’s own anti-inflammatory pain relieving agents assisting in the body’s natural healing. By raising the core temperature of the muscles massage allows the muscles to work more efficiently and the athlete to be more able in exercise.

As well as physically preparing the muscles before an event, massage can also help the athlete to mentally relax and focus on the event in hand.

Massage works on so many levels, all of which aim to reduce any symptoms that can cause a negative sensory input and lead to an increase in the positive input. This accounts for the general feeling of well being that players feel after any treatment.

Should all massage therapists be registered?

Posted on 25 August, 2013 at 22:58 Comments comments ()
I was talking with another massage therapist the other day and the topic of government regulating the industry was discussed.  At the moment anyone can set up and charge for massages.  There is going to be some kind of regulatory system up next year.  While it is always good to be registered with an approved body we were discussing the fact that massage is one of those services that has been around since the beginning of time.  It is one of the oldest healing practices.  Mothers do it for children when they are hurt, husbands, wives, friends, family do it for each other when there are tired hurting muscles or to make someone feel good, cared for and loved.  If someone is good at massage and wants to charge for their services does it really need to be regulated?  I guess if you were advertising to 'fix' someone who has a particular ailment then it could be a bit risky, but surely that is up to the client to ensure the therapist is suitably knowledgeable?  What do you think?

Ingrown Hairs

Minimizing the potential for Ingrown Hair

Pulling out the hair cleanly without breaking it is half the battle won in preventing the formation of ingrown hair. The other half iskeeping the pores open and not allowing skin to form over an close these off.  Exfoliation is an important component inassisting with keeping pores open.

To remove hair cleanly during hair removal follow theserecommendations:

  • Apply a thin layer of gel in the direction of the hair growth, preferably holding the spatula at a 45 degree angle as you spread the gel.
  • When applying the Hydro entangled strip over the gel, rub it down in the same direction as the hair growth leaving about 1/4 of the strip free to allow for a firm grip for a fast back pulling action.
  • Hold the skin taut before pulling the strip away against the direction of hair growth.
  • Pull back with a rapid movement close to the skin. Do not pull up or out, rather pull back.
  • One fast, smooth, pull back is much more effective than a series of light pulls which only increase the pain and leave patchy areas.
  • After 24 - 48 hours exfoliate the skin (with a Loofa sponge for example) to prevent the dead skin from accumulating in areas that can become ingrown such as the bikini line, upper thighs, underarms and calves.

Why Massage is Good for You ........Instalment 3

Posted on 17 July, 2013 at 22:37 Comments comments ()
'The first action of massage on muscles is to encourage them to relax and lengthen; (imagine a wound up elastic band being unraveled), relieving tightness, tension and toxins.

The second action is to encourage fresh blood into the congested area, bringing fresh nutrients and oxygen to the fatigued muscle, and assisting with the removal of the toxic waste product produced by muscle action called lactic acid.

Massage will assist the flow of the straw coloured fluid that circulates our body known as lymph. The lymphatic system is instrumental in fighting infection and developing immunity.

Often after a number of massages people find that they are more aware of their bodies and in turn more able to relax. When 80 percent of visits to GP’s [doctors] are stress related, massage has an important role to play in the nations health.'

Why massage is good for you

Why is massage good for you.... installment 2

'The action of rubbing the skin creates changes in the body and the hormone endorphin is also released. This is the body's natural pain killer which also creates a sense of well being.
It improves circulation by assisting the flow of blood from the limbs back to the heart and increases the flow of fresh blood, which carries nutrients and oxygen to organs and muscles.'

Every time I have a massage I wonder why I don't have more of them.  Add your comments about the benefits you have found from having a massage.

Why massage is good for you.

Posted on 10 June, 2013 at 0:19 Comments comments ()
Oh no, such a yukky weekend with the weather, but the forecast looks brighter.  Time for a bit of a lesson on why massage is good for you......

Massage is a wonderful antidote to stress and a powerful way to relax. It allows you to switch off that nagging voice inside your head, to unwind from the overwork, rush and worries that compound, encourages you to breathe deeply and slowly and eases out the tension found in tight muscles. Through the act of relaxation we stimulate a part of the brain (the parasympathetic nervous system) that slows down the heart rate, the rate of breathing, lowers blood pressure and stimulates digestion and immunity.
Massage can literally soothe our nerves and produce a feeling of well being.

Now doesn't that make you want to have one?  But wait there's more..... tune in at a later date for the next installment of Why Massage is Good For You.
